Thank you very much for reading our list of frequently asked questions before emailing us. We really appreciate that.
Q. There are no speed dots for a stretch of freeway I use. Why?
A. The speeds that you see on our site come from sensors Caltrans has buried in the freeway. For freeways in less populated areas,
these sensors often don't exist. For freeways in heavily traveled areas, the sensors are usually there but, for any number of
reasons, Caltrans may not have speed information from them. Rest assured that as soon as Caltrans provides additional speed information
to us, we will pass it along to you via our Web site.
Q. There are no cameras for a stretch of freeway I use. Why?
A. Caltrans has divided the state into 12 "districts" and each Caltrans district office controls what information is available for their
particular part of the state. As you can see from our site, the Caltrans office in San Bernardino has A LOT of camera images available.
San Diego currently has only 4 cameras, but they are very well positioned around the busy 5/805 merge.
We are working with the other Caltrans district offices to bring more cameras online. As soon as Caltrans makes the cameras available to us,
we will make them available to you.
Q. I'm not receiving alerts on my cell phone. What could be wrong?
A. To receive alerts on your cell phone, your phone and service plan need to support text messaging.
While nearly all cell phones sold in the last few years support text messaging, this is sometimes an additional option you
need to sign up for from your wireless service provider (e.g., AT&T Wireless, Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS).
To find out if your phone supports text messaging, just ask your wireless service provider if your phone has an email address.
If it does, then it will work with Sigalert.com. If it doesn't, ask them how you can get an email address for your phone.
Q. All I see are dots and diamonds and no freeways. What's the problem?
A. The problem is due to ad blocking software (e.g., Norton Internet Security) that you are running on your computer.
If you disable this software for our site, the map background (with freeways, land, water, etc) image will appear for you.
To disable ad blocking in Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2004:
- Go to Sigalert.com in Internet Explorer. (Even if you use Netscape, Mozilla, or Firefox, follow these instructions using
Internet Explorer.)
- Make sure the NIS toolbar is displayed (it has a green and blue world icon on it). If it is not shown,
choose View | Toolbars | Web assistant from Internet Explorer's menu.
- Click on the triangle next to the NIS world icon and uncheck "Block ads on this site" from the menu that appears.
To disable ad blocking in Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2003:
- Open NIS (double-click on the NIS world icon near the time displayed in your Windows task bar).
- Select "Status and Settings" under "Norton Internet Security" if it isn't already selected.
- Select the Ad Blocking option and press the Turn Off button.
Note: You cannot disable pop-ups for a single site in NIS 2003. Therefore you must disable ad blocking completely.
Q. Why doesn't the little detail box pop up for me when I move my mouse over a speed dot or an incident diamond?
Q. How do I get a route to automatically appear in the green bar near the top of the page?
A. The green bar automatically defaults to your "active" route. A route is considered active if there are any
"active" alerts on it (i.e., based on the current day/time, the alert is set to notify you of problems on the route).
So, to get the route you want to appear in the green bar, create an alert on that route and make
sure the alert's days/times cover when you typically check the site. You can create an alert from the
My Sigalert | Alerts page.
If you don't want to receive email or text alerts for this route, just check the "Temporarily disable this alert"
box when creating the alert.
Q. What is a Sigalert?
A. The official Highway Patrol definition of a Sigalert is "any unplanned event that causes the closing of one lane of traffic for 30
minutes or more."
Q. What is the origin of the term Sigalert?
Q. How do I cancel my subscription to My Sigalert?
A. To cancel your automatically renewing subscription, please email support@sigalert.com.
Be sure to include your login name and email address so that we can find your account information in our database.
If you cancel your subscription, your account will remain active until your renewal date but you will not be billed again.
After your renewal date has passed, your account will remain in our system but the My Sigalert features will be disabled.
You can manually renew your account at any time by entering your credit
card information on our secure payment page.
If you have purchased a My Sigalert subscription and want your account deleted, you will not receive a refund for the
remaining balance on your account.
Q. Where does the traffic information come from?
A. Freeway speeds are primarily collected by Caltrans from sensors embedded in the roads.
We download the raw speed data from them and display it on our site in a (hopefully) easy to use format.
Incident data comes from the California Highway Patrol in a similar manner.
Los Angeles speed data comes courtesy of the Regional Integration of Intelligent Transportation Systems (RIITS)
which is sponsored the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro).
Many of the San Francisco Bay Area sensors come from our partner SpeedInfo.
Q. The traffic data seems old. Why?
A. We occasionally run into problems gathering traffic information from Caltrans and the CHP. These are usually temporary
and correct themselves as soon as the Caltrans/CHP data comes back online.
Q. Do you have historical information about accidents that happened before today?
A. We only have information about accidents currently affecting traffic. When the CHP clears an incident from their
logs, it is removed from our Web site as well.
Q. Can I include Sigalert.com traffic information on my Web site?
A. Absolutely! Just send an email to Partners@Sigalert.com
and we'll send you a special URL you can use inside a frame.
